The San Diego Padres dropped a frustrating 4-2 decision to the New York Mets, losing two of three at Citi Field and suffering their first series loss since the Braves series in mid-July.
San Diego entered the finale having gone 6-0-1 over its previous seven series, but another strong starting-pitching performance went to waste.
Michael King delivered 6⅔ innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts, keeping the Padres in the game throughout. King entered the day receiving the lowest run support per start among regular MLB starters, and once again the San Diego offense failed to give him much help.
The Padres finished with only five hits, struck out 12 times, left seven runners on base and went just 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Carson Benge provided the game’s decisive swing in the fourth inning, barely keeping a two-run home run fair down the left-field line to give New York a 2-0 advantage.
Fernando Tatis Jr. answered with an RBI double in the fifth and later made one of the biggest defensive plays of the game, throwing Francisco Álvarez out at home plate in the seventh to preserve a 2-1 deficit.
But San Diego never capitalized.
Manny Machado finished 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and grounded into a costly double play. An eighth-inning throwing error by Song helped New York extend its lead before Jared Young made it 4-1.
The Padres mounted one final rally in the ninth when Luis Rengifo singled, Luis Campusano walked and Gavin Sheets delivered a pinch-hit RBI single. But Austin Hays grounded into a game-ending double play with the tying run still in play.
