The San Diego Padres had every opportunity to win Monday night at Citi Field — and somehow walked away with a maddening 2-1 loss to the New York Mets.
San Diego collected seven hits and five walks, but scored only one run after repeatedly running itself out of scoring opportunities. Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado were both thrown out at home by Mets right fielder Carson Benge in the first inning, and Xander Bogaerts was thrown out at the plate by A.J. Ewing in the second.
The Padres had four hits and no runs in the first inning, then loaded the bases with nobody out in the second before producing only Fernando Tatis Jr.’s deep sacrifice fly to left-center.
Those missed opportunities proved decisive.
Walker Buehler allowed two runs in the first inning but was excellent afterward, finishing with six innings, two hits, two earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts. Kyle Hart followed with two scoreless innings, giving San Diego every opportunity to come back.
Mets starter Nolan McLean survived the early chaos and allowed just one run over six innings despite surrendering six hits and four walks. New York’s defense was the difference, with three outfield assists at home plate helping preserve a one-run lead.
