Russia may have just crossed a line that matters far more than another bad economic statistic. One of Russia’s best-known exiled economists says Putin is moving the country toward a harsh command economy—and the evidence is showing up in two places at once. The remaining anti-war political opposition is being pushed off the ballot, while Russia’s federal prison system is preparing to connect inmates directly with business and industrial production. That is the connection we need to understand tonight. Because authoritarian politics and economic control are not two separate Putin stories anymore. They are becoming one system. And if Igor Lipsits is right, Russia is moving toward something that looks less like a modern market economy and increasingly like a Gulag economy.
