In June 1983, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Wayne M. McDonnell produced an intelligence assessment on the Gateway Experience, a Monroe Institute training system built around Hemi-Sync audio, relaxation, visualization, and staged altered states such as Focus 10, described as mind awake, body asleep. The document later appeared in the CIA’s declassified archives and became widely known as the CIA Gateway files, but it was not a CIA experiment proving consciousness outside the body. It was an Army intelligence analysis asking whether a program claiming expanded consciousness, out-of-body perception, and possible access to information beyond ordinary senses had any rational scientific basis.
This episode follows Robert Monroe’s reported out-of-body experiences, the development of Hemi-Sync and Gateway training, McDonnell’s unusual attempt to connect hypnosis, meditation, resonance, brainwave synchronization, Itzhak Bentov’s theories, holographic models, and the so-called Absolute, and the documented use of Monroe-related techniques in Army remote-viewing work such as CENTER LANE. The suppression question centers on declassification, Cold War secrecy, and the famous missing page 25. The page later surfaced, but it did not reveal proof of a hidden superhuman capability. The unresolved question is why military intelligence took this boundary between consciousness research, intelligence collection, and speculative physics seriously enough to write the report at all.
