Elite iron play is defined by one critical factor: low-point control. Unlike the driver, irons require a descending strike where the club reaches the bottom of its arc after impact. This ball-then-turf contact creates forward shaft lean, better compression, higher spin, and consistent distance. If the low point stays behind the ball, fat and thin shots become inevitable.

The key is an efficient proximal-to-distal kinematic sequence. Power flows from the pelvis to the thorax, arms, hands, and finally the clubhead. Research shows that this sequence maximizes energy transfer and clubhead speed while improving low-point consistency. Poor sequencing causes casting, power loss, and inconsistent contact.

The sternum acts as the center of the swing arc. At impact it should remain over, or slightly ahead of, the ball. Standing up or leaning away shifts the low point backward and reduces the space needed for full arm extension.

Forward shaft lean depends on a stable lead wrist. A flat or slightly bowed lead wrist ("motorcycle move") delivers the handle ahead of the clubhead while maintaining face control. Scooping or flipping adds loft, moves the low point behind the ball, and destroys compression.

Iron mechanics differ from driver mechanics. Drivers benefit from axis tilt and an upward attack angle, while irons require a centered chest, neutral body position, and a descending strike.

Common faults include excessive forward trunk tilt, limited thorax rotation, excessive pelvic rotation at the top, and lateral pelvic movement. These errors reduce X-Factor, disturb sequencing, and create inconsistent strike quality.
