On a freezing Sunday morning in 2019, nine-year-old Serenity Dennard ran out of a children's treatment facility in South Dakota's Black Hills. A witness watched her turn north along a rural road without a coat until the trees swallowed her from view. Three to five minutes later, that same road was empty. What followed became one of the largest missing-person searches in South Dakota history: more than 1,500 searchers, 66 agencies, hundreds of K-9 deployments, and 6,000 miles covered on foot.

They found nothing. Not a boot print. Not a piece of clothing. Not a single confirmed track.

Tonight, we examine the disappearance of Serenity Dennard, the institutional failures that cost rescuers critical time, and how a child could seemingly vanish within fifty yards of where she was last seen.
