A potential backfire for US President Donald Trump, who last week banned several media outlets from the White House.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW are now suing his administration, and other major TV networks are refusing White House pool coverage of Trump, as he heads to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Reuters Washington correspondent Bo Erickson says losing his audience may make Trump reconsider his stance.

"He loves that interaction, he loves the back-and-forth, he even loves the tough questions because he can get his point across."
