Four Married Men is now Good Times and for our first episode, we’re attempting to bring some intellectual credibility to the deeply irrational business of collecting watches.
Every collector has a philosophy, whether they realise it or not. Some collect by brand, complication, era or design. Others follow instinct, nostalgia and whatever happens to be occupying their browser history that week.
We discuss our own collecting philosophies, the themes that bind a collection together, and whether there really is a method to the madness. Does a collection need a purpose? Do our watches reveal something about us? Or are “themes” and “philosophies” simply elaborate ways of justifying another purchase?
Ultimately, we ask the question at the heart of the hobby: are watch collectors thoughtful custodians of mechanical art—or are we all fundamentally unwell?
Welcome to Good Times.
Tell us your collecting philosophy in the comments, and subscribe for more watches, questionable opinions and increasingly difficult-to-defend purchases.
