By 1895, the British Empire had effectively dismantled the Zanzibar Sultanate’s independence through a series of treaties and naval blockades. Sultan Barghash bin Said had died in exile, leaving his nephew Hussein bin Hamad on the throne, but real power lay with the British Resident, John Kirk, and later Sir Arthur Hardinge. This episode explores the simmering tensions that erupted in April 1895, when enslaved Africans and freedmen on the clove plantations of Unguja and Pemba launched a coordinated uprising. We examine the role of the watoro (freed slaves) and the nyampara (plantation guards), the failure of colonial authority to protect its subjects, and how the rebellion exposed the hollowness of abolitionism in a profit-driven empire. Through the eyes of rebel leader Juma and the British response, we uncover a pivotal moment where the promise of freedom collided with the reality of economic survival.
