In November 1885, Serbia and Bulgaria, two young Balkan states, went to war over a scrap of borderland. The conflict lasted barely two weeks, but it shook the region and redrew the map of influence in southeastern Europe. This episode follows the campaign from the Serbian offensive across the Timok River to the Bulgarian counterattack that ended in the Battle of Slivnitsa. We meet the key figures: Serbia's King Milan Obrenović, who launched the war hoping to seize territory while Bulgaria was distracted by its own unification with Eastern Rumelia; Bulgaria's Prince Alexander Battenberg, who had to rally an army in days; and the Bulgarian captain Atanas Uzunov, whose defense of the Slivnitsa heights became legendary. We also look at the role of the great powers, especially Austria-Hungary, whose ultimatum forced Serbia to stop, and Russia, which had withdrawn its officers from the Bulgarian army on the eve of the war.
