Mary Leng is a mathematical fictionalist, which is a philosopher who thinks mathematics is a useful fiction. This was a fascinating discussion on the epistemological challenges facing Platonism and how to make sense of fictionalism as an alternative. Our discussion ended with me trying out on Mary my view that mathematical knowledge is rooted in mystical experiences. Do you think she was convinced???
