Project ARTICHOKE: The CIA Program That Came Before MKUltra

Dela

Before MKUltra became the public name for CIA behavioral experimentation, Project BLUEBIRD and Project ARTICHOKE had already moved the Agency into secret research on drug-assisted interrogation, hypnosis, simulated medical settings, covert chemical administration, and attempts to affect memory. This episode reconstructs the documented lineage from early Cold War fears of Communist brainwashing through BLUEBIRD’s creation in 1950, the 1951 recommendation to rename it ARTICHOKE, the program’s operational narco-hypnotic interrogations, the role of CIA offices and medical support, Sidney Gottlieb’s later testimony, and the expansion of these questions under MKUltra. It separates what the surviving CIA and Senate records establish from claims they do not support: the files show a real search for influence over individuals, but they do not prove reliable total mind control, remote control, or programmable human beings. The episode also follows the damaged paper trail, including the 1973 destruction of major MKUltra files and the later discovery of records that allowed congressional investigators to identify 149 MKUltra subprojects.

This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication.
