He handed out advice like candy at Halloween. Go see a counselor. Go to a grief group.

Then his son died, and David Kessler had to take his own advice.

It took him three tries to walk through the door. Traffic. No parking. This shouldn't be happening to me.

He finally sat down with other parents who had buried their children. On the table sat books about grief. His books.

Denial came. So did acceptance. But acceptance felt like a floor, not a way through.
