When Edward the Confesor died leaving no children or close male blood-relatives it opened a succession dispute that was to lead to the end of an independent Anglo-Saxon England. Of course, no one knew that at the time but with hindsight the succession dispute provoked by Edward was the short term cause of the Norman Conquest.
