Today’s biggest winners and losers in the stock market.

On this episode of Stock Movers:

  • Mining and royalty stocks are rising on Friday as bullion extended gains after the US Treasury’s unexpected ramp-up in buybacks of long-dated government debt and copper’s rise amid a supply squeeze. Shares of Newmont Corp. (NEM) led the sector higher as spot gold prices rose as much as 5.2% on Friday, putting it on track for its third weekly gain.
  • Shares of Ross Stores (ROST) gained by the most in three months in the Friday trade. That’s after the off-price retailer boosted its earnings per share forecast for the full year. The company said it saw strength throughout the second quarter, with comparable store sales growth supported by “both an increase in new customers and higher engagement from existing customers.”
  • Shares of Merck (MRK) climbed gain as much as 3.7% to top Wednesday’s record high. Merck and partner Moderna (MRNA) reported mid-week that their personalized cancer vaccine combined with Keytruda helped cut the recurrence of melanoma in a large, late-stage trial. Shares of Moderna moved higher after the stock’s worst ever daily slide on Thursday - one day after the drugmaker’s record 177% surge that stemmed from a clinical trial win.
